A refreshed 2028 Volvo XC40 is on the way, and the updates reach the headlights, the cabin, the screen and the safety hardware. For Alberta shoppers weighing a compact Volvo SUV, here is what is confirmed so far.
The short version: a sharper face, a bigger screen with a conversational assistant, and a new sensor platform behind the driver aids.
The exterior gets the most visible changes. The Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights have a new design, a refined take on Volvo’s signature light shape. The grille is upgraded, and the front bumper, hood and front wings are redesigned.
At the rear, the XC40 has new LED rear lights, an upgraded tailgate and a redesigned rear bumper. New diamond-cut wheels come in 18-inch, 19-inch and 20-inch sizes.

The biggest story sits behind the bodywork. A new software and sensor platform adds new front and corner radars, a new front camera, new rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors and new parking cameras. The car gets a more complete view of its surroundings.
That platform supports automatic emergency steering and automatic emergency braking. If a collision looks likely, the car can warn you or step in to avoid or reduce the impact.
Three functions stand out for daily use:
The new 11.2-inch screen is larger and crisper, and key functions take fewer taps to reach. That matters in a compact SUV used for short, busy trips.
Google Gemini lets you talk to the car in everyday language. It can plan journeys, find stops and handle messages, including translating one before it is sent. It can also answer questions about your destination and the owner’s manual.
The cabin adds an updated wireless phone charger, smart storage and refined cabin illumination. For the first time, the XC40 offers Arianne Cardamom leather upholstery with Brown Ash wood decor. Black Ash or aluminium decor is also an option.
If you drive daily in Alberta, the safety platform and the 3D camera are the upgrades you will use most. Tight parking lots and busy sidewalks are where Door Opening Alert and the camera views earn their place.
If you care about how a cabin feels, the Cardamom and Brown Ash pairing is the headline choice. It is a first for the XC40. The aluminium and Black Ash decors suit a cooler, more modern look.
If you want the sharpest look, the 20-inch diamond-cut wheels and the new headlight design set the 2028 XC40 apart at a glance.
The 2028 XC40 is a clear step forward in design, driver assistance and cabin technology. The new sensors, the 11.2-inch screen with Gemini and the new upholstery make it the most complete XC40 yet.
