The 2026 Volvo XC90 has held its position as one of the most respected three-row premium SUVs in Canada for years, and the current generation makes a strong case for families looking for more than just a large vehicle. Seven seats, a refined interior, and a choice between two powertrains give it a breadth that covers a wide range of household needs. The real question for most buyers is whether the XC90 fits their specific situation — how they travel, how many people they carry, and how much electrification they want in the mix.
This guide covers the XC90’s two powertrain options, its trim structure, and the practical details that matter most to families: space, safety technology, and day-to-day usability. If you’re weighing the XC90 against other three-row options or trying to decide between its two configurations, the information below will help you narrow things down.

The 2026 XC90 comes in two powertrain configurations. The B6 AWD mild hybrid uses a 2.0 L 4-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged engine producing 295 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. An integrated starter generator running on a 48-volt system assists with energy recovery and reduces fuel consumption, though the vehicle does not run on electric power alone. Fuel economy is rated at 11.5 L/100 km city, 9.0 highway, and 10.4 combined.
The T8 AWD plug-in hybrid pairs the same base engine architecture with a 107 kW electric motor and an 18.8 kWh lithium-ion battery (14.7 kWh usable). Combined output reaches 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque. The T8 covers up to 53 km on a full electric charge, and when the battery is depleted, the combustion engine takes over, returning 9.1/8.6/8.9 L/100 km. On electric power, combined consumption is 3.8 Le/100 km. Charging takes up to 5.0 hours at 16A, 7.0 hours at 10A, or 12.0 hours at 6A.
B6 suits: Families who do most of their driving on highways or long intercity routes, and those without access to home or workplace charging. The B6 delivers composed performance and predictable fuelling with no dependency on charging infrastructure.
T8 suits: Families with a regular urban or suburban commute under 53 km and access to home charging. Running daily trips on electric power keeps fuel costs low, and the combustion engine is available for longer drives without range planning.
The XC90 is a genuine three-row SUV with seating for up to seven passengers across the B6 and T8 trim lineups. Legroom measures 1,038 mm in the front, 940 mm in the second row, and 811 mm in the third row. Headroom across all three rows (with the available panoramic roof) is 987 mm front, 979 mm second row, and 923 mm third row.
On cargo, the 2026 XC90 offers substantial room even with all seven seats occupied. With third-row seats folded, cargo space opens to 980 L (T8) or 977 L (B6). With second and third rows folded flat, total cargo volume reaches 1,950 L (B6) and 1,941 L (T8). Max roof load is 100 kg, and the maximum braked towing capacity is 4,960 lbs (2,250 kg) for both powertrains.
The integrated booster cushion, available on Plus trim and optional on Ultra, is a practical family feature built directly into the second row.
The 2026 XC90 is offered in three trims on both the mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid lineups.
XC90 Core covers the fundamentals well: panoramic roof, wireless phone charging, Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an 11.2-inch centre display, a 12.3-inch driver display, heated front and rear seats, and four-zone climate control. Seven seats are standard on Core.
XC90 Plus builds on Core with a 360° camera, full park assist coverage for front, rear, and sides, Harman Kardon Premium Sound, and an integrated booster cushion. It adds more exterior colour choices and upgrades to larger wheel options. Seven seats remain standard on Plus.
XC90 Ultra is the range-topper, adding a head-up display, ventilated nappa leather upholstery, front seat ventilation, power passenger seat with memory, rear door sun curtains, and interior illumination at high level. Optional additions at Ultra include Bowers & Wilkins audio, active air suspension, rear seat massage, and a six-seat layout. The 21-inch 5-multi spoke black diamond cut wheels come standard on Ultra.
Every 2026 XC90 trim carries a full suite of Volvo safety technology. Standard across Core, Plus, and Ultra:
Plus and Ultra add a 360° camera and full park assist for front, rear, and sides. Ultra adds a head-up display. Optional air suspension, available on Ultra, adjusts ground clearance between 212 mm and 252 mm.
The XC90 makes a strong case for families who want genuine seven-seat capacity in a premium SUV without giving up refinement or technology. The mild hybrid B6 is the right fit for families with longer daily distances, highway-heavy routines, or no access to home charging. The plug-in hybrid T8 rewards families who can charge regularly, with 53 km of electric range covering most school runs, grocery trips, and commutes at zero fuel cost.
Both powertrains share the same towing capacity, the same three-row interior dimensions, and the same safety foundation across all trims. The decision between them comes down primarily to your daily driving distance and whether home or workplace charging is practical.
