Canadian summers pack a lot into a few short months. One weekend it’s a run to the lake with the kayaks on the roof, the next it’s a campsite two hours out on a gravel road, and in between there are all the short trips around town that fill an ordinary Tuesday. A vehicle that handles that whole range without fuss makes the season easier.
The 2026 Volvo XC60 Plug-In Hybrid is a mid-size SUV built for exactly that mix. It pairs a turbocharged gas engine with an electric motor and a rechargeable battery, so short local trips can run on electricity while longer hauls lean on gas. Here are five reasons it suits an active summer schedule.
The XC60 Plug-In Hybrid carries a 14.7 kWh usable lithium-ion battery that provides up to 58 km of all-electric driving. That distance covers a lot of summer routine, from grocery runs to the drive out to a trailhead. Charge overnight at home and many short outings use little or no gas.
With passengers, coolers, and gear aboard, you feel how an SUV pulls away from a stop and up a hill. The XC60 Plug-In Hybrid produces 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque on its combined output, and it reaches 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Merging onto a busy highway with a full cabin stays calm and predictable.
Rated to tow up to 3,483 lbs (1,580 kg) when braked, the XC60 Plug-In Hybrid can pull a small utility trailer, a pair of personal watercraft, or a compact camper. All-wheel drive comes standard, which helps with grip on a wet boat ramp or a loose gravel launch.
Fold the rear seats and cargo space opens up to 1,528 litres, enough for camping bins, folding chairs, and a cooler or two. The roof carries up to 100 kg, so a roof box, a bike rack, or a kayak mount all have somewhere to go. Ground clearance of 200 mm gives a little extra breathing room on rutted campground access roads.
Summer weather turns quickly, and a sudden downpour can make a highway slick in seconds. Standard all-wheel drive sends power to all four wheels for stability, and the XC60’s driver-assist features help keep long stretches of road relaxed. The result is an SUV that feels settled on a soaked freeway and steady on a back road. On a long trip, the plug-in setup also lets you start the drive on a full charge and full tank, then top up the battery overnight at the campsite or cottage before the next leg. That flexibility is the quiet advantage of a plug-in hybrid: you get quiet electric running for the short hops and the reach of a fuel tank for the long ones, without planning a trip around charging stations.
